Our Ranch Home Renovation (Before After Interior Part 1)

Oh my goodness, y’all, we’ve been busting at the seams to share our ranch home renovation, before and after of the interior. After months of cleaning, sanding wood, and a lot of paint (and too many updates to mention), it’s time to reveal all the fruits of our labor. We can’t wait for you to see the inside of our Texas abode.

Grab a tall glass of Texas sweet tea and watch it all unfold. Someone pinch me! Am I dreaming or is all of this ours now?

A HUGE thanks to Surf Prep Sanding for sponsoring this post. This would have never been possible without your help.

Home Sweet Ranch Home Renovation

It all started back in December 2020 when my hubby sent me an email about this house he found. I had no idea he was even looking and we had just completed updating our current home. I was so happy with everything. Finally, after 15 years our home was where I wanted it to be. The inside and out.

Most recently was had just updated and painted the red brick exterior of our then-current home (that took me 5 years to convince hubby that it wouldn’t destroy the brick.) GAWD! Men and their obsession with painting brick and wood.

Well, get ready to see a whole lot of painted wood in our forever ranch home. Yep, I won that battle too!

Open Concept Living – Ranch Home Renovation

Before & After

Walking into what we call now “our Ranch Home” was quite a bit to take in. While the design and the open concept were beautiful, the wood tones screamed man cave. But after only a few steps inside the house, my designer mind switched into high gear.

Do you do that too?

I couldn’t help myself. My mouth just opened and out it came. I was walking around like a mad woman making changes out loud. Both my hubby and real-estate agent were looking at me like… what in the world!

It took some serious conversations between hubby and myself to come to an agreement that if we were going to buy this house, I would need to make the necessary updates that would make me happy.

He didn’t know at the time that HE would love it too. Why do they doubt?

Painting Knotty Pine and Rough Cedar – The Prep

We knew there would be a lot of painting to do so I did what any other 58-year-old woman would do. I called my painter for a consultation. Yes, painters have painters.

After meeting with our painter at the home, we decided for a number of reasons that an oil-based primer would be best to block stains, odors, and bleed-through of the knots before painting.

The paint colors used throughout our ranch home renovation are Sherwin Williams Alabaster White and Mindful Gray.

And then there was my job! My job was cleaning, sanding, patching, repairing woodwork, and replacing a lot of trim. All that was done before the painters could start. And I prepped a massive amount of cabinets in the kitchen and laundry room.

It was quite a circus for several months.

Concrete Flooring

It’s an animal lover’s dream home. The stained concrete floors are perfect for our four-legged extended family members. Having three dogs that live inside when they’re not chasing rabbits can be quite messy.

Shortly after moving in, we purchased a SHARK robot vacuum. It has been a life saver! Best investment ever.

The worn areas on the concert floors are reminders to me that the home was well-loved. It’s character and I wouldn’t change a thing!

The Ranch Kitchen Renovation

Let’s talk kitchens!

It was the center of our ranch home renovation and I believe that every man or woman deserves a great kitchen and a space to create in.

The cabinets were still in great condition so we demoed everything but the cabinets. The cabinets were painted with Sherwin William Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.

We installed all new appliances, lighting, a drop-dead GORGEOUS farmhouse sink, butcherblock acacia countertops, and a cool new kitchen faucet that has an LED light that changes colors. The faucet was for my hubby since he was allowing me to make most of the design changes. He’s a big kid!

I’ll Never Eat Anywhere Else – The View

And of course, I saved the best for last. Our dining area!

The first thing I did was remove the blinds. I thought about hanging curtains for a split second and then… Nah.

I never dreamed I would have a space large enough for “granny’s table.” She has a new home too.

We replaced the ceiling fan with a beautiful french farmhouse chandelier. It’s perfect!

Every night we sit (the two of us) at this big ole table and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of our forever home.

Ranch Home Dining Room

  5. LUV ALL THE OPEN SPACES. WHITE IN KITCHEN LOOKS GOOD. WHO DOESN’T LUV A WHITE KITCHEN? SOUNDS LIKE U HAVE A GOOD HUSBAND.

  6. Thank you so very much for sharing your before and after photos.
I so enjoyed seeing the wonderful changes you made. The house looks so much brighter lighter and airy with the fresh white paint. I have always liked wood and knotty pine but there was way too much of it before your renovations. You have great vision and such an eye for details. One thing I must admit how daring you were to not have doors on your pantry…I don’t think I could live with that always having to have one’s pantry in pristine order. lol

    1. Thank you, Ellie! Well, the pantry doors will return. I’m in the process of stripping them and needed a break from all that woodworking. You’ll be seeing them soon. I promise! I’m not a neat freak! 🙂 xo

  7. Beautiful home & renovation work!! I know it wasn’t easy as we just did some of the same in our home (actually moved back into the home I grew up in!)!! Enjoy every minute in your new forever home!!!

    1. Oh, Pam! That is wonderful! Congratulations on your reno and moving back home. What a great thing to happen. We will enjoy and wish you all the same in your new “I’m finally home” home. Blessings 🙂 xo

  8. Just beautiful. What a wonderful journey creating this memory together to make this ranch home “yours”.

    1. Thanks, Leslie! Boy, do we ever have memories: some good and some not so. But we can laugh now. Be looking for more updates coming soon. 🙂 xo

  9. I love everything about your new home and “the acreage” it sits on. Paint really does make such a difference, from dull and boring to wow! Just love it❣️ Congratulations❤️

    1. Thank you so much, Janet! I’ve always said that paint gives you the best bang for your buck. It never disappoints. Thanks for reading. Be looking for more updates soon. 🙂 xo

  10. Very exciting, Do!!!! It’s a beautiful home and I like everything!!! I especially love the dining area, with all those beautiful windows! I adore the lightness and clean look of the white paint. Also, I think the way you kept some of the wood unpainted looks great!!!!! What a lovely new home you have! Best wishes for you and your husband, and a happily ever after, as well.

  11. What a beautiful place!! I’m so impressed with how much you guys have already done, and look forward to seeing what you do going forward!

    1. Hey Donna! Honestly, we are tired and taking a little break throughout the Summer. We will start again in the Fall on the outside. Thanks for reading. 🙂 xo

  12. It’s incredible how you brought light into the house painting some of the wood.
    Looks beautiful!
What about the bathroom next to the dining room. Saw you did not change the door!
God bless and enjoy your home!
    Encarnita

    1. Hello, Encarnita! We decided to keep the bathroom and update it. There is a quick glimpse in the video tour on the blog post if you want to see how it looks now. It’s charming. Quirky but nice. Thanks for reading.:) xo

  13. That’s a lot of wood. The updated painted walls and woodwork are beautiful. The new lightening perfectly accessorizes the new look. All your hard work and eye for interior design is showing. Congrats on your beautiful “new” forever ranch home. Looking forward to see what’s next.

    1. Thank you, Joanne!
It’s always good to hear from you. It’s not hard when you have a good structure to work with. The architectural elements were already in place; I just added my design style. We love it so much! 🙂 xo

  14. Omgoodness Do, you have done an amazing job in your new place!! Your kitchen is out of this world gorgeous! I’ve enjoyed watching the process and I’m excited to see the rest of the renovations! 🥰 Pinning!

  15. Absolutely my taste, perfect I would like to live again in a old house but there are hardly houses like that for sale or rent in our area in Germany !!

    1. Hi Veronika! It was a great find and we don’t see homes like this around my area either. We were truly blessed to have stumbled upon it. Thanks for reading. 🙂 xo

  16. Well done! Beautiful. Your talent and love of color speaks lovely. The simplicity of home is what I love and at same time inspires. Congratulations. Time has arrived to celebrate with hubby and break open a bottle of champagne.

  17. Having been a General Contracting, Design Firm for 40 plus years, I applaud your choices and discretion by way of keeping just enough of the natural woods to balance out the newly painted areas.
Keep Do-ing what you Do and for sharing your journey with us!

    1. Thank you, Kimberly! That’s the BEST compliment to date. We wanted to keep the look of the architectural elements and wood but just lighten up the space. My Grandmother had the same kind of ceilings in her home. I remember when I was a kid staring up and thinking… one day. My one day is here. 🙂 xo

  18. I have kitchen envy my friend. Just gorgeous and thanks for inviting us all into your new ranch home! 💙🙏🤗

  19. Gorgeous transformation Do! Were the kitchen cabinets sprayed, brushed or rolled and did you prime or just sand? I’m thinking about a kitchen update too 🙂

    1. Hi Sara! Thanks for reading. The kitchen cabinets were sprayed inside and out. This wasn’t an option because the cabinets were smelly. We used an oil-based primer to cover the smeall before painting. I plan on writing a blog post on the process soon. I have endless content in this house. LOL xo 🙂

  20. What you have done is absolutely beautiful. I am in love with the kitchen and the dining room. What a view from the dining room!

  21. You have really transformed this home into a cozy haven. I love everything you have done to the home. It’s beautiful, Do.

  22. Wow. I’m in love with the beamed open ceilings! Beautiful home. Please paint those pantry doors and put them back up. Those were one of my fav things in your kitchen area 😫 You likely know you can reseal your concrete floors to make them like new again if you ever decide you want to. Your energy is enviable Do. Your home is gorgeous.

    1. LOL, My energy is spent. That’s why the pantry doors arent up yet. They will be, I promise. I like the rustic unfinished look of the floors. Shiny has never been my style. We did consider refinishing them, but in the end, I loved the patina that time has given them. Thank you so much for your kind words, and I can’t wait to share more with you, Jackie. xo 🙂

  23. This is amazing, as are you! I’ve done many kitchen cabinets, but I was recently thinking maybe I should try a chalk paint next time. I noticed that you did not select a chalk paint product and I wondered what your thoughts were about that. I did my kitchen table with chalk paint and gator hide and I love it. I’m wondering what your thoughts are on the paint choices that were made on the kitchen cabinets. I know professional painters almost always choose other products but I also don’t think they use the products we often play with. I do love the transformation all your work really paid off. I hope you just walk around loving that place! So smart to get agreement with the hubs before you signed the dotted line!

    1. Well, hello C!
Chalk paint is great, don’t get me wrong but I’m old school when it comes to using what works for me. I have heard of so many that do use chalk paint with good results. The one thing that sold me on this paint is that it didn’t need a sealer and if it gets a little surface scratch (which is difficult because it dries super hard) you can lightly sand the paint smooth again. That’s just one reason. I suggest you do a lot of research on this subject. I know one thing… I never want to go through that again. You rock for painting cabinets. I’ll stick to the furniture. 🙂

  24. Do, your home is absolutely spectacular, what a wonderful job you and your hubby have done! Absolutely had too many “wood tones”; love the white! I love reading your blogs, love your ideas and your inspiration!

    1. Hi Jackie,
I’m so glad you stopped by to take a tour. We do love it a lot and have so many plans to continue the updates throughout the rest of our home. I’ll be sharing it all here. 🙂 Have a great week and it’s always nice to hear from you. xo

  25. Do, your labors of love have certainly paid off. Your home is stunning and I can see why you love it so much.
Your hard work has really paid off.

    1. Thank you, Wendy! You are always so kind and my inspiration for building a “she shed.” I want one so bad! I drool every time I see it. Have a great week. 🙂 xo

  26. Oh my goodness!!! How beautiful. So excited for you. I’m building my forever home as we speak. This has been a perfect inspiration! Great job Do!

    1. That is so exciting, Rain! Oh, please keep me up to date if you have a moment to spare. I envy you a bit as I wanted to build our forever home. LOL, are we truly ever satisfied? Merry Christmas! 🙂 xo
