Why Make Wood Easter Crafts For Decor?
Making your own farmhouse decor is so satisfying! It totally works with Easter and spring colors, cool reclaimed wood, and that vintage spring vibe. Plus, each Rustic Scrap Wood Carrot is unique, depending on the wood, how you distress it, and the paint you use.
These are great for:
- Basket fillers
- Glass container filler
- Entry tables
- Table centerpieces
- DIY gifts or to sell
They can also double as a Rustic Wooden Carrot Sign when displayed upright or grouped together.

SUPPLY LIST:
To create your DIY wood carrots, gather these materials:
- Scrap wood pieces or a carrot-shaped wooden block (I used a 1×12)
- Saw (hand saw or miter saw)
- Sandpaper or sander (my professional hand sander)
- Colonel Mustard and Rustic Red (to make orange)
- Coffee Bean (black brown)
- Paintbrush
- Paint knife
- Fresh rosemary, or faux greenery for the tops
- Hot glue gun
How To Make Wooden Carrots DIY
STEP: 1 Cut Your Carrot Shape
Start with scrap lumber (1×12) and cut it into tapered pieces to form a carrot-shaped wooden block. Imperfect shapes add character and enhance the rustic look, so don’t be overly concerned about getting each one perfect.
To get the angle, I set my miter saw to 5 degrees and alternated the cut in both directions across a 2×12 board. This method allowed me to get 17 pieces from a single 2-3-foot board, with some leftover material.
To create carrots of varying sizes, I simply shortened some pieces by cutting off the tops to make different lengths. Not all carrots from the garden are the same size. 😉
Honestly, at this point, I wasn’t sold on the design of my wood Easter craft project, but I was starting to see my vision, and I was looking forward to seeing how they would look after they were painted! Paint can change everything!

STEP #2: Sand the Edges
Lightly sand the wood with 180-grit sandpaper to smooth out splinters while retaining some texture. Rustic decor looks best when it isn’t perfectly polished—this gives your scrap wood Easter craft an authentic farmhouse look.

STEP #3: Paint or Stain
To get the orange colored paint I wanted, it felt like elementary school all over again! I didn’t have it, so mixing my own was the way to go, and I’m all about that!
Yellow + red makes orange. What I had on hand was Rustic Red and Colonel Mustard seed yellow chalk mineral paint. Turns out, I couldn’t have picked a better combo for this beautiful color.
I didn’t measure the paint, just eyeballed it as I added it into a paper bowl until I got the color I wanted.
I painted the wooden carrot pieces with the orange paint first, and while it was still wet, I dipped my brush into the red and yellow and blended them on top to make the carrots look colorful. Just a subtle color variance.

Doing this added subtle layers of color to these wooden carrots.

Once the paint was dry, I used a dark brown/black paint (Caviar) and a paint knife to add some lines for a cool, dimensional look. This gave them a more rounded look.

STEP #4: ADD The Carrot Top
Now, grab your drill and make some small, evenly spaced holes at the tops of each carrot. This will make it easy to add your greenery.

Attach the greenery at the top using hot glue. Using natural textures helps your wood Easter carrot decor feel organic and handmade.
I went with some rosemary snips from my garden. Might be a stretch for the imagination, but hey, we are creatives. There are no rules!

Styling Ideas for DIY Wood Carrots Easter Craft
Once your Wood Carrots are complete, try these styling ideas:
- Place carrots in a glass container or a dough bowl for a centerpiece
- Add to a tiered tray with greenery and neutral accents
- Pair with bunnies, baskets, and vintage books
Mixing up the carrot sizes adds some cool dimension and visual appeal, and wrapping raffia or jute twine around them makes for a super cute carrot trio!

Tips for the Best Rustic Finish
- Use reclaimed or weathered wood whenever possible
- Layer paint for depth instead of using one flat color
- Don’t over-sand — texture enhances the rustic look
- Mix raffia and greenery for a natural carrot top
- Make several sizes for a cohesive display
Each wood carrot should feel handmade and slightly imperfect. That’s the way I prefer mine. Perfectly imperfect, just like me. 🙏🏼
