DIY Witch’s Broom: How to Make a Witch Broom From Branches

Supplies for This DIY Broomstick Witch Broom

One of the best things about this project is that you probably already have most of what you need—especially if your yard is anything like mine and there’s never a shortage of sticks and branches. 😂

For the broom, look for a mixture of thin, flexible twigs and slightly thicker branches. Don’t worry about finding perfectly straight pieces. Crooked, gnarly, and uneven branches will give your broom much more character.

Supplies

• One long, sturdy branch for the broomstick
• A bundle of smaller branches and twigs
• Heavy-duty wire
• Jute rope or heavy twine
• Pruning shears CHECK THESE OUT!
• Wire cutters
• Pliers, if needed for tightening the wire

TIP: Before you buy anything, take a walk around your yard. Fallen branches, tree trimmings, and even those scraggly little twigs you normally toss aside are perfect for this project. The more imperfect they are, the more authentic your witch’s broom will look.

Step 1: Gather and Trim Your Branches

Start by gathering a good-sized pile of branches and twigs. I used what I already had around my yard, choosing a mixture of thin, wispy twigs and a few slightly thicker branches for fullness and structure.

Don’t overthink your choices. You’re making a witch’s broom, so crooked, gnarly, and a little wild is exactly what we’re going for. 🧹

These branches are from my live oak trees. A bit gnarly, but I like a rustic broom.

Choose a branch for the broomstick

Pick one long, sturdy branch to use as the handle. When deciding how to make a broomstick for this project, there’s really no need to make one at all!

Look for a branch that’s:

• Long enough for the finished broom
• Sturdy enough to support the bundle of twigs
• Comfortable to hold
• Crooked and imperfect—the more character, the better!

Trim the smaller branches

Use pruning shears to remove any branches that are too thick, bulky, or sticking out where you don’t want them.

Leave plenty of the smaller offshoots intact. Those wispy ends are what give the bottom of this DIY witch’s broom its wonderfully scraggly appearance.

TIP: Don’t cut all your branches to the same length. A mixture of long and short pieces will create a fuller, more natural-looking witch’s broom when everything is bundled together.

Step 2: Bundle the Branches for the Witch’s Broom

Now it’s time to turn that pile of sticks into something that actually resembles a witch’s broom. 🧹

Arrange the branches

Lay your smaller branches together and begin arranging them into a bundle.

As you work:

• Place thicker branches toward the center for support.
• Add thinner, wispy twigs around the outside.
• Stagger the lengths so the bottom looks natural and uneven.
• Rotate the bundle as you work to keep it full on all sides.

Don’t worry about making it perfectly symmetrical. A little wild and wonky is exactly what gives this DIY witch’s broom its rustic charm.

Secure the bundle with wire

Once you’re happy with the shape, wrap heavy-duty wire around the upper portion of the branches several times, but leave a little wiggle room for the handle.

Twist the ends of the wire together and use your wire cutters to remove the excess.

Give the bundle a gentle tug to make sure everything feels secure but not overly tight. If any branches are loose, that’s okay. We will be adding another piece of wire in a bit.

TIP: The wire is what really holds the broom together. The jute rope we’ll add later is mostly decorative, so don’t be shy about wrapping that wire tightly!

Step 3: Add the Broomstick Handle

Now it’s time to add the broomstick and bring this witch’s broom to life!

Position the broomstick

Take the long branch you chose for your handle and push the bottom end down into the center of your bundled branches. You should have enough space ans long as you didn’y overly tighten the branches.

Position it several inches inside the bundle so it has plenty of support.

Before securing it, check that:

• The broomstick feels centered and balanced.
• The branch extends far enough into the bundle to stay secure.
• The crooked side of the handle faces the direction you like best.
• The twig bundle still looks full around the handle.

Secure the handle

Wrap more wire tightly around the branches and broomstick to hold everything together.

Give the handle a gentle wiggle. If it moves around too much, add another piece of wire and tighten it until the broomstick feels sturdy.

Don’t worry if you can see the wire—we’ll cover it with jute rope in the next step.

TIP: This is one of those projects where you can stand back, look at it, turn the broomstick a little, and decide which direction looks best. There’s no right or wrong way. Let that crooked branch do its thing!

Step 4: Wrap the Witch’s Broom With Jute Rope

Now for the finishing touch! The jute rope hides the wire and gives the broom that rustic, old-fashioned look.

Wrap the jute rope

Start just above the wire, then wrap the jute rope tightly around the broomstick and the bundled branches.

Continue wrapping until:

• All of the wire is completely covered.
• The branches feel snug against the handle.
• You have a thick jute band around the top of the broom.

Keep each row of rope close together as you wrap so the wire doesn’t peek through.

Secure the rope

Once you’re happy with how it looks, tie the jute securely and trim the excess. I was going to add hot glue to secure the jute rope, but then I remembered how hot it gets in Texas. Best to tie it off and tuck the ends under.

I left mine a little imperfect because, well… we’re making a witch’s broom, not preparing it for a broom beauty pageant. 😂

Give everything one final tug and make sure the handle and branches feel secure.

TIP: You can add more jute than you think you need. A thicker band helps disguise the wire and gives your DIY witch’s broom a more finished, handmade look.

Step 5: Shape and Trim Your DIY Witch’s Broom

Your broom is officially together! Now take a few minutes to fluff, shape, and trim the branches until you love the way it looks.

Shape the broom

Stand the broom upright and spread the branches apart with your hands.

Take a look at it from all sides and:

• Pull apart any branches that are bunched together.
• Reposition twigs to fill in bare spots.
• Remove any branches that look too bulky.
• Trim pieces that stick out a little too far.
• Leave plenty of uneven, wispy ends for that rustic look.

Give it one final check

Make sure the broomstick feels secure, and the branches aren’t slipping out of the bundle.

And don’t get carried away with those pruning shears! This is one project where perfectly even isn’t the goal.

I wanted my finished DIY witch’s broom to look like it had been gathered from the woods and possibly parked outside a witch’s cottage for the last hundred years. 😂

TIP: Stop trimming before you think you’re finished. You can always cut off another branch, but you can’t put that wonderfully crooked little twig back once it’s gone!

Tips for Making Your Witch’s Broom Look Old and Rustic

If you’re wondering how to make a witch’s broomstick look like it’s been around for a few hundred years, the secret is simple—don’t make it perfect!

Natural materials do most of the work for you. Crooked branches, uneven twigs, and rough textures give this broom the aged, rustic look I wanted without adding any special finishes.

Here are a few things that worked for me:

• Choose a crooked handle. Skip the perfectly straight stick and look for a branch with bends, knots, and lots of character.
• Mix your branch sizes. Combining thicker branches with thin, wispy twigs makes the broom look fuller and more natural.
• Leave the ends uneven. Resist the urge to trim everything straight across.
• Let some twigs stick out. Those random little branches are what give it that wild, old-fashioned appearance.
• Use natural jute rope. The rough texture works beautifully with the branches and helps hide the wire underneath.
• Don’t overwork it. Sometimes you just have to put down the pruning shears and walk away. 😂

That’s what I love about making a DIY witch’s broom from branches. There really isn’t a wrong way to do it. Every broom will turn out a little different depending on what you find in your yard.

And personally, I think a witch would choose the crooked one anyway.
