Modern Farmhouse Summer Home Tour

Welcome to our first-ever Summer Home Tour! I’ve been asked a lot about the interior of our home and if it looks anything like the photos of my furniture makeovers, and the answer is YES. The style I love is the style I live in. You might even recognize a few of my furniture makeovers and DIY projects from previous blog posts. I’m sure I’m no different than any other furniture artist. Sometimes we have to keep certain pieces, well, for a while.

Summer Home Tour 2019

Before we get started on our summer home tour, I want to say for the record that I did NOT want a new home. I begged Mr. Honey Do to buy me a fixer-upper. That was 13 years ago, and I have done everything possible that I can think of since then to make this new house look like an old farmhouse. We live in a small town of 3,500 people in Canton, Texas. Home of the First Monday Trade Days. A monthly flea market brings in over 1,000,000 people a year to shop vintage goods. It’s no surprise that I LOVE flea market decor.

Living Room

I’m starting our summer home tour in the heart of our home, our Living Room. Here you’ll notice a big BLACK thing over the fireplace. Let’s say I pick and choose my battles wisely. It’s such a man thing! Our home is forever evolving, but I love its direction. And how about that rusty old coffee table? Would you believe me if I told you it was wood? It’s IRON rust paint! I created a patina finish that made this coffee table a piece that Mr. Honey Do refuses to part with. He calls it his Man Cave Furniture. It will work for now.

Our living room is also the home of a circa 1906 Kimball upright piano. It’s in fantastic shape for its age, and it still plays. The piano was a symbol of social status back in the early 1900s, and I have fond memories of my Grandmother’s upright piano and how I loved to sit and dream about being a famous composer. I’m still dreaming.

Along each side of the fireplace are armoires that I use for quilt storage. We discussed a possible bookshelf in these empty spaces, but I like using these vintage pieces. Who doesn’t need more storage, right?

The faux shiplap wall is in progress. We will be adding trim around the edges to finish it up soon. After painting and climbing a 10 ft ladder all day, I needed a break.

What would a summer home tour be without a fireplace? Especially one that’s ready for summer. This DIY Log Fireplace Cover was super easy to create and adds so much warmth to the fireplace when not in use. And can I tell you how proud I am of the painted tiles around the fireplace’s opening? I’m in love with the cleanness of the black and white and how it makes the whole room feel.

Open Concept Living

Can you believe that we don’t even own a sofa? Since it’s just the two of us, a couple of comfy leather recliners are the perfect spot to sit in front of the fireplace after a long day to watch one of our favorite Big Bang Theory episodes. The room is open, airy, and bright. I used drop cloths hung on a towel ring to give the windows a little dress. No curtains for me! I want all the light I can get inside my home. The blinds give us all the privacy we need.

Entryway

Our entryway is narrow but just enough room for another of my favorite pieces. It’s the perfect home for this vintage art deco sideboard and my favorite quote. As you can see, the flooring is in progress as well. We plan on completing the porcelain tile throughout our home.

Dining Room Area

The living room and dining room are open to one another. It’s nice to sit at the table and still communicate with our family in the living room and kitchen as well.

Simplicity rules in our home decor. I like to use bold patterns like the buffalo plaid for that farmhouse feel. A thrift store wicker tray and dollar store water goblets are simple and inexpensive. Oh, and always cotton stems! What’s a farmhouse without them?

Guest Bath | Summer Home Tour

I added these happy colors of teal and chartreuse for the guest bath. A vintage painted mason jar with an airy grouping of decorative florals pulls these colors together.

Kitchen | Summer Home Tour

No, I haven’t painted the cabinets. Shocker, I know! There’s just something about them I love. The light-colored wood adds to the farmhouse feel for me. The kitchen is small but functional, especially for two people. I’m seriously thinking about painting the cabinets and would love to know what you think, but I love wood. Maybe paint the lowers?

On the opposite end of the kitchen is a breakfast nook. Since I’m a huge coffee snob, I opted to use this as my coffee nook. The antique pie safe and my coffee bar were also thrift furniture finds restored.

Vintage Storage

The lockers! Another great storage idea. I have always wanted a set of lockers, and these were exactly what I was looking for. These are located just outside my bedroom and are the perfect hideout for misc items when the company comes unexpectedly and when I need to tidy up quickly. They hold a lot of stuff.

Bedroom | Summer Home Tour

Awe, yes, our bedroom is a retreat. It’s customized to our specifications, down to the massive headboard made from doors. It was one of our first builds together in our new home.

Finding the right wall color for our summer home tour bedroom makeover was a challenge, but we settled with the perfect shade called Wall Street by Sherwin Willams. See the complete bedroom makeover by clicking HERE.

Master Bath |Sumer Home Tour

Our bathroom is very modest, nothing fancy, just comfortable. I like adding personal touches like the bathtub caddy over the tub—the perfect place for a glass of sweet tea and a good book after a long hard day. Please give me all the bubbles!

We recently added a wood frame around the builder-grade mirror to match the cabinets. It added a bit of warmth to our space and gave it a finished outlook.
