Creating a Halloween bat wall doesn’t require hours of cutting tiny bats from paper—or cleaning up little black scraps afterward. I used a package of realistic 3D PVC bats that came with double-sided adhesive, making this Halloween decorating idea fast, easy, and surprisingly affordable.
For less than $6, I transformed a plain wall into a swarm of flying bats in just a few minutes. The flexible wings give the bats a realistic 3D appearance, while the included adhesive makes them easy to arrange across a wall, fireplace, doorway, or Halloween display.
It’s quick. It’s inexpensive. And best of all, I didn’t have to drag out a single power tool. That’s what I call Halloween magic. 🦇 I’m also sharing a few of my Halloween bat wall displays from previous years because these little creatures never seem to land in the same place twice.

What You’ll Need To Create A Halloween Bat Wall
This is one of those wonderfully simple projects with a very short supply list.
- Realistic 3D PVC bats in assorted sizes
- A clean, dry wall
- A step stool, depending on how high your bats plan to fly
The bats I purchased came with double-sided adhesive, so there was no need to buy anything extra. The entire package cost less than $6, making this an affordable way to decorate a large wall without filling the room with more Halloween stuff.
Before attaching the bats, wipe away any dust from the wall and allow the surface to dry completely. I also recommend testing one adhesive strip in an inconspicuous area first, especially if your wall has a delicate paint finish.

How To Create A Halloween Bat Wall
Step 1: Shape The 3D Bats
The PVC bats arrive flat, but each one has creases along the wings that allow you to bend them forward. Gently fold the wings at different angles to give the bats their realistic 3D appearance.
Avoid shaping every bat exactly the same. Fold some wings farther forward and leave others more open. The slight variations create shadows on the wall and make the finished swarm appear to be flying instead of standing at attention.
I shaped all the bats before attaching the double-sided tape. This made the decorating process faster once I began arranging them on the wall.

Step 2: Plan The Direction Of The Bat Swarm
Before attaching the bats, decide where you want the swarm to begin and which direction it should fly. I started my bats near the furniture and arranged them so they appeared to be flying upward and across the wall.
A gentle curve or diagonal pattern looks more natural than a straight line. Keep the grouping fuller near the starting point, then gradually spread the bats farther apart as the swarm moves across the wall.
Don’t worry about creating a perfect layout before you begin. I placed a few bats, stepped back, and adjusted them as I went. There was no measuring involved—because I’m decorating for Halloween, not directing air traffic.
Step 3: Add The Double-Sided Tape
Once the bats are shaped, add a small piece of the included double-sided tape to the flat center of each bat. Avoid placing the tape on the folded wings because they need to remain lifted away from the wall to create the 3D effect.
Peel away the protective backing when you’re ready to position each bat. Press the center firmly against the wall for a few seconds without flattening the wings.
The included tape held the lightweight PVC bats securely, but I recommend testing one piece in an inconspicuous area first. Paint finishes can react differently, and a damaged wall would be a much scarier surprise than the bats.

Step 4: Attach The Bats To The Wall
Begin placing the bats along the path you planned, starting with a few of the larger bats near the fullest part of the swarm. Mix in the medium and small bats as you work upward and outward.
Turn each bat slightly in a different direction and vary the spacing between them. Avoid lining them up in neat rows—the bats are supposed to look like they’re flying, not waiting patiently at the DMV.
Press only the taped center of each bat against the wall. Leave the folded wings lifted so they cast small shadows and maintain their realistic 3D appearance.
I attached a few bats at a time and stepped back often to check the overall flow. If one looked out of place, I carefully moved it before pressing the tape too firmly.

Step 5: Step Back And Adjust The Bat Wall
After attaching several bats, walk across the room and look at the arrangement from a distance. This makes it much easier to spot awkward gaps, straight lines, or areas that feel too crowded.
Move any bats that interrupt the natural flow, and add smaller bats near the outer edges to make the swarm appear as though it continues beyond the main grouping. I kept the center fuller and allowed the bats to spread farther apart as they traveled upward across the wall.
There really is no perfect arrangement. Keep adjusting until the movement feels natural and the swarm works with the furniture or Halloween display below it. Then stop before you overthink it—or before the bats take over the entire house.

Easy Ways To Style A Halloween Bat Wall
The bats make enough of a statement on their own, so there is no need to cover every surface with Halloween decorations.
Keeping the color palette limited allows the black bats to stand out against the white shiplap without making the room feel overly busy. The natural wood console and branches add warmth, while the bats bring in just enough Halloween drama.
Choose a spot with enough open wall space for the swarm to travel. Even a small group of bats can make an impact when they appear to be flying into—or out of—the surrounding decor.
You can also create a bat wall:
- Above a fireplace mantel
- Around a mirror or picture frame

- Over a console or dresser
- Across a covered porch wall
- Around a doorway
- Along a staircase
Last year’s Halloween wall was under our staircase. I like keeping it neutral so that the bats are the star of the show.

Reuse The Bats For A New Display Every Year
One of the best things about these lightweight PVC bats is that they can be reused in a completely different way each Halloween. You can change the swarm’s direction, move it to another room, or use fewer bats for a smaller display.
A few years back, I arranged them around my handmade ghost artwork and antique cabinet. The bats began near one side of the cabinet and traveled upward across the wall, creating the same sense of movement but with an entirely different look.
That is why I love inexpensive decorations that aren’t tied to one exact display. The bats may cost less than $6, but they can keep earning their room in the Halloween storage bin year after year—which is more than I can say for some of the things hiding in there.
When Halloween is over, carefully peel the adhesive from each bat and store them flat in a shallow box or large zip-top bag. Add fresh double-sided tape the next time you use them.

Create Your Own Halloween Bat Wall
I love a Halloween project that makes a big impact without requiring a big budget—or an entire afternoon.

Whether you arrange them over a cabinet, around a fireplace, or beneath a staircase, the secret is to create movement and let the swarm flow naturally across the space. Bend those wings, step back occasionally, and keep adjusting the bats until the arrangement feels right.
Sometimes the simplest decorations make the biggest statement—and this Halloween bat wall proves it.
If you create your own bat wall, I’d love to see how you styled it! Share your display with me, and don’t forget to pin📌 this tutorial so you can find it when Halloween decorating begins.
Until the next project… xo, Do
