Hey there! Today’s project had me stumped and I had to call in the big guns. Anytime I get stuck on a repair job, I can always depend on Mr. Honey Do coming to the rescue. I’ve had this sideboard for a while in my home and knew at some point I would have to address the issue of repairing the rotted wood where the old casters were attached to the feet. The challenge would be to repair the rotted wood and add new caster wheels.

Repairing The Rotted Wood

How I rescued a sideboard by adding caster wheels. #dododsondesigns #casterwheels #sideboardrescue #furniturerepairAs you can see, the bottom of the legs appears to have water damage. I’m pretty sure someone has removed some of the damage by cutting off the legs which creates another problem. My whole goal is to add new caster wheels to this sideboard to give it back some height. The support boards that connect the 6 legs can’t be removed.

Before Adding The New Caster Wheels

How I rescued a sideboard by adding caster wheels. #dododsondesigns #casterwheels #sideboardrescue #furniturerepairI started with wood glue and applied it to the inside and in all the cracks of the wood. Using clamps helped to hold the wood in place for the next step.

The hold was pretty deep, so it needed extra time to fully cure and become hard. After it was dried, I used my orbital sander to clean up the rough areas and get it ready for new holes.

Drilling The Holes For The New Caster Wheels

Inserting The Sockets For The Caster Wheels

The next step was a pure genius hack! Giving all the credit to Mr. Honey Do. Credit is given where credit is due.

The Fix

I would have never thought of this in a thousand years. My brain doesn’t work like this. I’m a painter and love pretty things, right? A custom piece of metal was cut with a hole drilled for the caster wheels to fit in perfectly. That crack is no longer a concern as the metal plate gave the added strength it needed to sustain the weight of the sideboard without blowing the side out.

Until the next project…
